Examples of Our Learning

One of the joys of being a Reception teacher is seeing the rapid progress that children make.  Often it is during the Reception year that children read their first word, learn to write their name clearly for the first time and write their first sentence.  Maths and number skills develop rapidly and children become so much more confident with talking to others and managing their emotions.  Have a look at the photographs below to see the progress that the children have made.  All the staff in Reception are very proud of each and every child in the class.

Progress in Writing

The writing example on the left of the screen was produced in September.  The writing on the right is what the same child has produced a term later.

Maths

It has been really pleasing to see the children progress from having an awareness of number to being able to touch count accurately, write number sentences, know some doubles and halves of numbers up to 10 and know some of their number bonds.  Children also learn other skills in maths such as how to use a ruler, a knowledge of capacity and how to sequence and order events.

Expressive Arts and Design

Expressive arts and design includes making as well as art.  Children are encouraged to use a wide range of craft materials and resources to construct with.  This area of learning also covers music and song.  We are very fortunate to have Sarah from Rainbow Rhyme visit us each week to teach fantastic music lessons.

Understanding the World

Understanding the World covers past and present, the natural world and people and communities. Children learn about the environment, different religions and cultures and what happened in the past. Often history is taught through stories.
