With Chinese New Year being this week we thought we could learn all about it and make some of the popular Chinese decorations.

First we need to know about Chinese New Year. Please click on the link below and watch the Newsround episode all about Chinese New Year.

Next we would like you to design and make your own Chinese dragon. We have attached some ideas on our class page.

You can make the dragon, draw it on paper, draw it on the computer or make a mask. Be as creative as you like.

Maths

In Maths today you will need your Maths Workout book and we will be working on pages 26 and 27.

We are going to continue with time and today we are looking at time problems.

To solve some of these questions you will need to be able to show the time on a digital clock.

For example:

If it says write quarter past 3 on a digital clock this would look like

You will also need to order times from the slowest to quickest.

For example:

1 minute 20 seconds

45 seconds

1 minute 50 seconds

1 minute

To order them first we need to look at the minutes.

With our example we have 3 that have 1 minute. We now need to look at the seconds. The slowest time is the one with the largest minutes and second. This one would be:

1 minute 50 seconds

Our second slowest is:

1 minute 20 seconds, as this is the next largest minute and seconds.

Then it is:

1 minute, as this is the only one left with a minute

Then finally our fastest time is:

45 seconds, this has no minutes and just seconds.

English

Today in English we are going to carry on with our ‘Talk for Writing’ unit. We will need our ideas from yesterday to help us as we are going to write our poem.

Let’s recap on the poem we are using as an idea for our own. Please click on the link to listen to the poem The Magic Box by Kit Wright.

Now we are going to write our poem.

We need to start the verse with:

I will put in the box…

This needs to be on a separate line to my ideas.

We are then going to use our list of what we would put in our box from yesterday.

We need to use adjective in our verses to make them sound more interesting to the reader. Adjectives are describing words.

An example of a verse is:

I will put in the box

the beautiful, happy smile of my daughter,

the hilarious jokes from my husband

and the big, golden, fluffy face of my dog.

We need to use our 8 ideas in our poem. I have used 3 of my ideas in a verse, using a line per idea, along with adjectives.

Our final verse is all about what my box looks like.

It will have 3 lines that start with:

My box is fashioned from…

With…

It’s…

This needs to be on a separate line to what your boxes looks like.

An example of my verse is:

My box is fashioned with bright, shining, silver and gold,

with sparkly red and purple jewels.

It’s lock is designed to only open for me.

Shh! It’s a secret what is in it, is for me.

You should write at least 3 verses in your blue exercise book.

Music

In today’s music lesson we will be learning more about pitch. Last week we were learning about instruments that make high pitched sounds, can you remember any of them?  During the lesson today we will be learning about what types of instruments make low pitched sounds. We would like you to have a think about which instruments you think will make low pitched sounds and write them down, at the end of the lesson we will see if the instruments you wrote down were mentioned during the lesson. All you will need for this lesson is your body, your brains and your voices so please click on the link below to begin the lesson.

Home Reader

We now have access to Bug Club. This allows you to read a variety of books at the correct book band you are on at school. We have allocated your book bands but once you have read all of the books within your current book band it will automatically move you up to the next one. We can’t wait to see how many book bands you move up.

Remember to start each story by using the read to me button and then read the story yourself. After each story make sure you answer the questions at the back of the book to help with your comprehension skills.
