Amazingly

Please connect to Google Classrooms for a 15 minute Meet to talk you through your learning today.

Today we will be using the sentence opener "Amazingly" to share facts about a mythical creature to our readers. This fronted adverbial is a great way to get your readers hooked to want to read more.

Take a look at some of my examples:

Amazingly, all unicorns speak French.

Amazingly, all unicorns have hooves made of diamonds.

You can really engage and inform your reader by using a conjunction (and, but, so) to extend your facts.

Amazingly, unicorns will only drink from waterfalls but some have been found in the middle of a desert.

Amazingly, most unicorns have silver tails and candyfloss manes.

Amazingly, all unicorns have great hearing so they can hear where the fairies are hiding.

Mission 1

  • Choose 3 fantasy creatures and write an "amazingly" sentence about each one. Play around with your ideas first and make it fun.
  • Aim to include a conjunction (and, but, so) to extend the information you are sharing.

Mission 2

  • Choose your favourite sentence and write it up neatly and then add another 2 or 3 sentences to give your reader more facts about your creature. You can make this up so let your imagination go wild. (You will not need to open with "amazingly" for each extra sentence.)

Turns and direction

Please have a toy car or any toy that clearly has a front to point towards positions at the ready.

Today, we are learning to make quarter, half, three quarter and whole turns both eft and right.

First hold your hands infront of you and stick your thumbs out. The hand that makes an "L" shape is your left hand so that means your other hand must be your right hand.

If I imagine a circle, and turn my car through each of the quarters, the position of the car will change as it turns on the spot. Practise turning your toy through a quarter, half, three quarters and the whole way round back to the beginning. Now try the same going left.

Mission 1

  • Choose 4 objects or draw 4 pictures for your toy to move towards and place at each of the four quarter markers. (Cutting out and folding a circle may help here!)
  • Practise making quarter, half, three quarter and whole turns both left and right. Do this lots until you can confidently turn your toy on the spot.

Mission 2

  • Begin to make predictions about where the toy will face before completing the turns.
  • Change the starting position to be facing you. Can you still make the toy complete left and right turns correctly. Big hint: Imagine you are sat inside. Where would you face?
