Area

Zoom call at 9:30 for the first 15 minutes (log in details will be the same for every session). Please attend if possible.

In this lesson we are going to continue developing our knowledge of area. For some of you this will be the first time we are learning about area this year. The area is the space inside the shape, we measure this by looking at the length and width of our given shape and multiply these numbers together.

When we present our answer it is presented like this: 25cm2 this shows we have looked at the inside of a 2D shape and found out what space is inside.

Example:

In this example we would multiply 12 by 4 to find the area.

12 x 4 = 48

Area = 48cm2

The other way we can find area is by counting the squares that are shaded inside the 2D shape – be careful when you have some different shapes that not the whole square is shaded- try to use the other shaded squares to make a full square and only count this as one.

For example:

In this instance the squares have been cut in half so you would need to remember that two halves

make a whole.

The two circled halves can be counted as one square so the area of this shape would equal 8cm2

Geography

As we have been learning about Alaska in Geography and we were about to begin carrying out research about the different aspects of Alaska. Can you choose one of the following and create a poster about it.

Choose from:

  • Alaskan People
  • Alaskan Animals
  • The Alaska Landscape
  • Alaskan Plants
  • Alaskan Weather

Once you have chosen your topic to research think about what it is like in Alaska at different times in the year, for instance how does the weather change through the seasons? Do different plants that are native to Alaska grow at different points of the year? What animals would you see on the mainland of Alaska and off the coast? What are the native people called and what is their national dress?

English

Something different today – parents/carers be prepared to be asked lots of questions today

Zoom call at 11.45am for the first 15 minutes (log in details the same as Friday). Please attend if possible.

Time for English – using what we read in Friday’s reading session of ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’, we find out that the narrators Gran was a refugee too. For you work today I would like you to spend some time creating a family tree – what can you discover about your grandparents or great grandparents that you didn’t know before.

Below is an example of the Royal Family’s family tree just so you have an example, I know mine wouldn’t be this large so don’t worry if you only have a few family members on there. It would be great to see what you discover. There is a template below for you to use or you may want to create your own.

1:30 – 1:50

Quiet Reading Time

Find a comfortable spot for your reading or you may want to find an unusual place for a change. Ask your adult to send me a picture of you reading in your spot or tell me where it is on Class Dojo.

Make sure you have your reading record signed by an adult at home to show that you have kept up your reading and send over a picture on Class Dojo, this will earn you more dojos.

1:50 – 2:50

PE

As this afternoon would be your normal PE lesson in school it’s time to get active.

Below are some options for having a go at and exercising – I know it’s tricky to get outside while we are isolating and the weather isn’t great but we can still find some fun exercises to do whilst we are indoors.

Use some of the following links to get active:

Active8 with Joe Wicks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqLNxJe4L2I

Indoor Football Drills: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coQdgX1XbEM

(Please be careful with the ball inside and make sure you have some space around you)

Martial Arts for Beginners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4Y9iVCEthU

In this lesson you will learn basic karate techniques.

If there’s a different activity you choose to do within this hour please send photos over on Class Dojo and let me know what you choose.

Another opportunity for us to read more of our class read The Boy at the Back of the Class. Let’s continue on the journey with Ahmet and his classmates to see what happens next. Has Ahmet had an interesting half-term like our narrator? Will we find out what happened to the rest of Ahmet’s family?
