Percentages

Google Classroom at 9:10 for the first 15 minutes (Click the Meet Link). Please attend.

When we work out percentages you need to have in your mind the words ‘per cent’ mean ‘out of 100’.

Fractions as percentages

If you are converting a fraction to a percentage, when our denominator is 100 and the numerator is 43

43

100 so our percentage would be 43%

If you had you would need to make your denominator out of 100 – this is

                   10

Something you did last week with your fraction work.

So to make this out of 100 we need to multiply both the denominator and numerator by 10. This would give me 90 so this would give me 90%

                                  100

Percentages to Decimals

If I had to convert percentages to decimals again you would need you to use your place value knowledge.

Example:

                                           47% as a decimal would be 0.47

Any percentage that you convert to a decimal will always finish in the hundredths column because % means out of 100.

Shaded Shapes as Percentages

When you have a shaded shape and need to convert it to a percentage – remember to write the shaded amount as a fraction first and then you can convert the fraction to the percentage easily.

In this example there are 3 parts shaded and 10 parts altogether. This makes the fraction

3

10

You would then need to make the fraction out of 100 so multiplying both parts of the fraction by 10 – making 30    = 30%

                                           100

Quiet Reading Time – Bug Club

Find a comfortable spot for your reading or you may want to find an unusual place for a change. Ask your adult to send me a picture of you reading in your spot or tell me where it is on Class Dojo.

Make sure you have your reading record signed by an adult at home to show that you have kept up your reading and send over a picture on Class Dojo, this will earn you more dojos.

Today’s lesson is going to be slightly different to normal – we will be watching the video below to introduce Birds of Prey. We will learn about what they are, what they eat and the different types.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zpdkjxs

Once you have watched this video I would like you to carry out your own research about Birds of Prey and create a fact file about the information you find. This ties in well with our class read ‘Skellig’. As we mentioned last week, we have come across lots of different links to birds in our book with the mention of ‘Crow Road’, ‘Falconer Road’, the birds that Mina sees in the attic and the feeling of what we think are wings on the man’s back in the garage.

I have attached a template for a fact file but feel free to create your own in your books.

Geography

Rivers

For today’s lesson you are going to learn some more about Rivers Around the World. Read through the presentation and take a look at the activity sheet – you will need to carry out some research to find information about the named rivers from around the world. You will need to find out where the source is, what countries it runs through, how long it is and if there are any tributaries (smaller streams that join the river).

1:15 – 2:35

PE

For today’s PE lesson you’ve got a couple of PE at Home videos to have a go at – see how long you can hold the plank for and let me know on Class Dojo. Once you’ve done your plank challenge and seen how many squat thrusts you can do in your time, you then need to select on of Joe Wicks’ PE sessions that he has done on Youtube. Parents, don’t forget to take some actions shots and send them over.

We will begin to read some more of our class read ‘Skellig’ – this session will take place on Google Classroom. I will be reading Chapters  during 17 and 18this session. I wonder what we will find out about Michael this time - will Mina meet the man in the garage?
